Located in the heart of Clayton, (Central and Bonhomme). A family-run restaurant, established in 1981 by Jack Crall, Carol Hellman, Joe Crall, and Sam Crall. CJ Muggs Bar and Grill has been in business for over forty years. Muggs (as called by locals) is now in its second generation and occasionally you can see the young third-generation helping out.
The menu is eclectic with something for everyone. Featuring appetizers, salads, homemade soups, chili and gumbo, distinctive pastas and risottos, fresh fish and beef, gourmet pizzas, quesadillas, sandwiches, burgers, a children's menu and family recipe specialties. The food is fresh, scrumptious and plentiful. Muggs has won many awards for its delicious entrees.
The setting is airy. The décor is original. The dark stained cherry wood tables and cozy chairs are inviting. With floor-to-ceiling windows and French doors offering great views of the bustling streets. Large shaded patio areas clad with wrought-iron tables and chairs and an awning. The service is friendly and accommodating. Best of all, of the personnel have been with CJ Muggs for years.
The bar is vast, fifteen or so bar stools, a mix of tall cocktail and regular sized tables scattered about that creates a separate experience from the dining room. The bars' exude a cozy, warm, sophisticated feel, with lots of wood paneling, leaded glass and low lighting. During happy hour and late night appetizers and drink specials are available. Dress is casual, though anything goes. Full lunch and dinner menus are available in the bar.
The Clayton Location
In Clayton, the clientele (with a little help from the bartenders and cocktail servers) know how to entertain them selves. Mingling and consumption of spirits seem to be the activity of choice. Happy hour is teaming with people pouring from of their offices to get a good start on the evening or to cap off their day. Clayton also offers a late night happy hour (starting at 9:30 pm). Regional and national sporting events and news are broadcast from several strategically located televisions throughout the restaurant. Local celebrities are known to 'drop by' for some fun too.
Clayton has a separate banquet room, which can be partitioned from the rest of the dining room by a close-able window-paned wall for privacy. Fifty or so people will comfortably fit for just about any occasion.
The service is fast and cordial without being overly attentive. The food is excellent with something on the menu to please everyone. The atmosphere is energetic and the clientele diverse, attracting a healthy mix of singles, families, out-of-towner's, office staff, executive professionals, neighborhood regulars, theatergoers and local celebrities.
